Auto Diagnostic Codes: Common Causes & How to Fix

Auto diagnostic codes, also called Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), are codes stored by a vehicle’s onboard computer when it detects a problem with the engine, transmission, emissions system, electrical system, or other monitored components.

Most vehicles made from 1996 onward use the OBD-II diagnostic system. These codes can be read with an OBD-II scanner connected to the vehicle’s diagnostic port.

How Auto Diagnostic Codes Work

A typical diagnostic code contains one letter followed by four numbers, such as P0300, P0420, or P0171.

The first letter identifies the affected system:

The first number also provides useful information:

  • 0 usually indicates a generic SAE/OBD-II code.

  • 2 and 3 may be generic or manufacturer-specific depending on the system.

How to Check Diagnostic Codes

Locate the OBD-II diagnostic port, normally underneath the dashboard near the steering column. Turn the ignition to the ON position, connect an OBD-II scanner, and select Read Codes or Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Write down both the code and its description before clearing anything. You should also check freeze-frame data, which records operating conditions such as engine speed, coolant temperature, vehicle speed, and engine load when the fault occurred.

How to Fix Auto Diagnostic Codes

A diagnostic code identifies the system where a fault was detected, but it does not always identify the exact defective part.

For example, P0171 System Too Lean does not automatically mean the oxygen sensor is bad. The actual cause could be a vacuum leak, dirty MAF sensor, low fuel pressure, damaged intake hose, or another problem.

The correct repair process is:

Read the code → inspect related components → check wiring and connectors → review live data → perform component tests → repair the actual fault → clear the code → road-test the vehicle.

Avoid replacing parts based only on the code description.

Check Engine Light Warning

A steady Check Engine Light usually means the vehicle has detected a fault that should be diagnosed soon.

A flashing Check Engine Light commonly indicates a severe misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Reduce driving and diagnose the vehicle as soon as possible.
